Midtown Atlanta police standoff; Ga., Calif. war of words

*An Atlanta police officer is hospitalized after a standoff with an armed resident of the Four Season Hotel in Midtown. Police Chief Darin Schierbaum says as many 15 shots were fired during the event. Later 70-year-old Jay Berger was taken into custody. The chief did not say how the officer was injured, but did say he is expected to recover.  Schierbaum says the suspect 70-year-old Jay Berger was experiencing a dangerous mental episode.

*With the Peach State having become a film giant over the past 15 years by allowing uncapped tax credits for productions, the California governor is looking to get some lost business back. Gavin Newsom has proposed to expand the cap on the Golden State’s film tax credit program to about $750 million, up from $330 million. Newsom also criticized Georgia legislation on women’s, LGBTQ and voting rights, saying their values do not compare to California’s. A spokesperson for Gov. Brian Kemp responded by criticizing California’s troubled fiscal standing and highest in the nation gas costs.
