Hit-and-run driver quickly arrested thanks to passerby

A Gainesville man is free on bond following his arrest over the weekend on charges growing out of a hit-and-run accident. The Hall County Sheriff’s Office (HCSO) says a passing motorist played a key role in his apprehension. The accident happened at Roy Parks Road and Candler Highway.

HCSO NARRATIVE:

“The collision between a pickup truck and a passenger vehicle occurred around 4:25 p.m. Saturday…when the driver of the truck, later identified as Juan A. Almendarez, 32, made a left turn from southbound Candler Road on to Roy Parks Road. Mr. Almendarez struck the left front bumper of the passenger vehicle, which was stopped at the stop sign of the intersection.

Mr. Almendarez fled the scene of the collision. A witness followed the pickup and obtained a tag number, which was turned over to the Hall County Sheriff’s Office (HCSO) deputy who responded to the accident scene.

The driver of the passenger vehicle was not injured, but her car sustained extensive damage as a result of the crash.

Deputies were able to track Mr. Almendarez to his residence the following day where he was arrested and charged with making an improper left turn and…hit and run.

He posted a bond of $5,830 and was released from custody later that same day.”
