Ga. Power able to restore power remotely

Georgia Power issued an update Saturday morning on its continued work restoring power to customers of were left without it in the wake of Hurricane Helene – and is many instances it’s able to do so remotely.

“In the aftermath of Hurricane Helene, we are working tirelessly to evaluate damage that occurred across the state due to high winds, heavy rain, and flash flooding,” according to a company news release.

“Since the beginning of the storm, we have deployed over 14,000 personnel to begin full-scale damage assessment and restoration with power being restored to more than 250,000 customers by crews with the aid of our smart grid technology which helps enable remote restoration.  As debris and downed trees are cleared, we will be able to accelerate our restoration efforts with more assistance arriving throughout the weekend, but extended outages are possible due to the severity of the damage.”

The hardest hit areas included Augusta, Macon, Valdosta, and Savannah due to heavy rains and winds that reached up to 100 mph, resulting in 730,000 customer outages.
