Winder officials: No natural gas leak

The City of Winder utilities department confirms there is no natural gas leak in the areas between State Route 11, downtown Winder, and State Route 211.

Since Monday, the City’s gas department staff along with Winder Fire Department personnel have received and responded to numerous calls reporting a foul odor resembling that of a natural gas leak.

But, after thorough investigations over the last three days, a spokeswoman for the city says it has been confirmed by the City’s gas department staff that the odor is not related to a natural gas leak.

So, what was causing the smell?

“After establishing a map of the reported odors, City staff (contacted) a local business and discovered that the odor is result of a sewage treatment process they regularly implement, and the lack of rain and high temperatures has created the foul odor,” spokeswoman Katie Strickland said Friday.
