5 take-aways from Tuesday’s primaries

Here are five take-aways from Tuesday’s Democratic, Republican, and non-partisan primaries:

  1. Gainesville gets its first Latino council member. Abigail Guzman defeated Devin Pandy and will fill the post left vacant by George Wangemann who resigned late last year for medical reasons.

2. Largest margin of victory: Chris Lewallen with 88% of the vote in a two-man race with Felton Wood for a vacancy on the Lula City Council.

3. Smallest martin of victory: Drew Echols (52.8%) in the State Senate Race with Josh Clark (47.2%).

4. Jackson County will have a new sheriff starting January 1: Kevin McCook who won a four-way Republican Primary race with 64.3% of the vote. When the retiring Janis Mangum leaves office Dec. 31 she will have held the post for 12 years.

5. Voter turnout in Hall County Tuesday was 16.87%. Statewide, it was 20%.
