Last year was one of the warmest on record in Georgia, according to data released recently by the National Weather Service (NWS) office in Peachtree City, and Gainesville was one of the hottest places in the state.
The NWS 2023 Weather Summary shows the average temperature in Gainesville was 2.4 degrees above normal. Atlanta was even hotter – 3.4 degrees higher than usual. By comparison, Macon, traditionally one of the warmest places in Georgia, was 1.2 degrees above normal. It did, however, record the hottest day of the year among the nine north and central Georgia cities included in the report – 104 on August 26. That same day, Gainesville recorded its warmest day of the year – 99 degrees, as did all but one of the other towns.
As for rainfall, Gainesville finished the year with 55.02 inches, 1.4 inches above normal.
