First-time applications for unemployment insurance in Georgia were a mixed bag in January.
A recently released report from the Georgia Department of Labor (GDOL) shows claims were up 18.7% in Hall County compared to December but were down 22% from a year earlier. The statewide numbers show an increase of 50.5% over December but an 11.5% decrease compared to a year ago.
For the Gainesville-based Georgia Mountains Regional Commission (GMRC), which includes most of northeast Georgia, applications were up 14.5% in January compared to year before and down 18.7% compared to a year earlier. But, the Athens-based Northeast Georgia Regional Commission (NEGRC), which also includes some area counties, had a 6.8% decrease in January along with a 2.4% decrease for the year.
