A 14-year-old student at Apalachee High School was found with a gun on campus Wednesday, four months after a mass shooting at the school left four people dead and ten others wounded.
The student was charged with possession of a weapon on school grounds (2 counts), theft by taking, and minor in possession of a firearm, according to the Barrow County Sheriff Jud Smith. Smith says school officials and a School Resource Officer (SRO) were able to take custody of the student and the gun without incident and that there have been no reports of the student threatening anyone with the gun.
The student, whose name has not been released because of his age, was taken to a Regional Youth Detention Center.
Meanwhile, Apalachee students, parents, and staff are demanding more action to ensure student safety at the school. While the district has increased SROs and implemented safety measures, some people feel more needs to be done. The community is calling for a detailed plan outlining changes to be made at schools, and the district is set to present data from a safety survey later this month.
