More than 1,000 volunteers came together for this year’s Lake Lanier Shore Sweep, removing about 110 tons of trash and debris from the lake and its shoreline. The sponsoring Lake Lanier Association (LLA) released the final numbers Thursday. There were 17 cleanup sites this year.
Volunteers representing local businesses, schools, civic organizations, lake clubs and families contributed to the cleanup effort. Participants navigated the lake by boat, jet ski and kayak, while others worked on foot along the shoreline. With assistance from marine contractors and their barges and flotillas, crews removed large debris items from the lake, including hundreds of dock floats and an abandoned boat weighing approximately 1.5 tons.
“The continued support of our volunteers and community partners is essential to keeping Lake Lanier clean and enjoyable for everyone,” said Victoria Clevenger, executive director of the Lake Lanier Association. “Shore Sweep is a great example of what we can accomplish when the community comes together with a shared commitment to protecting the lake.”
