Monitoring of water quality in Lake Lanier and the Chattahoochee River between the lake and Columbus is nothing new. The Chattahoochee Riverkeeper has been doing it for years. But there’s something new to this service this year.
The river watch organization will issue a weekly swim guide – available online and via an app directly to your phone – on Fridays between Memorial Day and Labor Day for the 300 different locations it monitors. It consists of a series of maps with red or green markings with the green dots indicating a low risk of E. coli contamination and the red ones indicating a high risk. The findings will be based on readings taken the previous Thursday.
So, what were the findings this week heading into the Memorial Day Weekend? Lake Lanier looks good, but bacteria levels are elevated downstream in the metro Atlanta area.
