UPDATE: More on what prompted Monday’s Lyman Hall ES lockdown

We now know the details of that law enforcement activity that prompted the brief lockdown at midday Monday at Lyman Hall Elementary School.

HALL CO. SHERIFF’S OFFICE (HCSO) NARRATIVE:

A 911 call from a residence in the 3300 block of Dogwood Drive sent Hall County Sheriff’s Office deputies to the scene of an unknown problem at approximately noon on Monday, May 5.

The female caller, 63, reported a possible hostage situation at the residence involving a male family member, 40, and an unknown man, both with firearms. The caller, who went to a neighbor’s house, also reported hearing a gunshot.

Because of the severity of the call, arriving deputies and Gainesville Police Department officers surrounded the residence and established a perimeter. They blocked Dogwood Drive, and an HCSO School Safety Officer placed Lyman Hall Elementary School on an external lockdown.

Deputies flew a drone through an open doorway of the home and confirmed the caller’s male family member was inside. They used a patrol vehicle intercom to repeatedly ask him to come out peacefully. They also spoke with the caller, whose story about the events varied and changed.

After approximately ten minutes of giving commands over the intercom, the woman’s male family member came out of the house with a handgun. He put the firearm on the ground and surrendered peacefully. Deputies performed safety checks of the home and property. They did not find anyone else.

Deputies met with both individuals and a Georgia Crisis and Access Line clinician who responded to the scene. Both the caller and male family member were transported to Northeast Georgia Medical Center for evaluation in lieu of charges.”
