9:00 a.m. FRIDAY UPDATE:
In an update to an advisory issued earlier today, the National Weather Service (NWS) says the chances of severe weather in the Gainesville area and elsewhere in north and central Georgia are increasing.
“Here is the latest on the severe weather potential today,” the revised advisory begins.
“For the vast majority of north and central Georgia, damaging wind gusts and hail will be hazards as a line of storms moves through from northwest to southeast. A brief tornado or two embedded in the line of storms will be possible, but the overall probability of a tornado occurring at any one location is quite low. There is little change in our expectations for storm timing from our previous post.”
(See updated map which shows Gainesville and vicinity now at a Level 2 alert.)
EARLIER STORY. POSTED AT 4:00 A.M. FRIDAY:
Don’t look now but those people at the National Weather Service (NWS) Office at Peachtree City are at it again, forecasting yet another threat of stormy weather for our area and other parts of Georgia.
“…due to a front that will bring more strong storms to Georgia on Friday. Here are the details of Friday’s severe threat,” their advisory says. “A cold front will bring strong to severe thunderstorms to Georgia on Friday.”
Though northeast and northwest Georgia are included, the greatest threat is south of the I-85 corridor. That’s where a Level 2 threat can be found. North of I-85, a Level 1 threat is in place.
And after Friday? Right now things are looking good if you’re ready for a break from the rain. Most sunny days through the end of next week, the NWS says.
