Trump budget bill & health care in Ga.; SCOGA guts new election rules; ICE protests in Atlanta

(GEORGIA NEWS NETWORK)

*A Congressional Budget Office analysis estimates that nearly 625,000 Georgians could lose their healthcare coverage if President Trump’s “Big, Beautiful” budget bill is passed. Laura Colbert with Georgians for a Healthy Future tells 13WMAZ that the bill could increase costs for private health insurance and make it harder to enroll in Medicaid. The premium tax credit may also be eliminated, leading to higher premiums for all. The bill still needs to be voted on by the Senate.

*Georgia’s Supreme Court (SCOGA) has invalidated four out of seven state election rules approved by the State Election Board before the 2024 general election. The ruling, which partially affirms, reverses, and vacates a previous decision by the Fulton County Superior Court, sends the case back for further review. The Court found that only one of the seven rules, regarding video surveillance of drop boxes, was valid, while the others exceeded the State Election Board’s authority.

*Dozens protested outside the ICE field office in downtown Atlanta, demanding the release of a detained union leader and an end to ICE raids. Organized by the Union of Southern Service Workers, the peaceful rally saw no arrests, with police monitoring the crowd on Monday. Similar protests occurred in over a dozen cities nationwide on the heels of the one in Los Angeles that has led to clashes with police and national guardsmen.
