Sentencing in bus stop death; Savannah explosion; English only, please

*A 27-year-old woman was sentenced to eight years in prison for first-degree homicide by vehicle after hitting and killing an 8-year-old at a Henry County bus stop in February 2024. Adalynn Pierce was crossing the road to board her school bus when Kaylee Andre, who claimed to be late for work and had fogged windows, struck her. Despite the bus’s stop signs and lights being activated and the horn being sounded, Adalynn was hit by the car. She later died at the hospital.

*A Friday morning explosion destroys a Volkswagen dealership in Savannah. Firefighters responded to the scene on Abercorn Street shortly before 10:00 to calls of an explosion and structure collapse. WSAV reports more than 500 people in the area called 9-1-1. A large plume of smoke could be seen for miles. There is no word of injuries at this point.  

*The Georgia Department of Public Safety is enforcing updated rules from the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration that require commercial drivers to demonstrate English proficiency during inspections. The rule, effective since Tuesday, aims to improve highway safety by ensuring drivers can communicate with officers. 11Alive reports State Troopers can administer an English assessment, and drivers failing the test will be placed out-of-service starting June 25.
