Hall County sheriff’s deputies charged a man from Cumming with several offenses following an investigation into an erratic driver in a church parking lot Sunday morning.
HALL CO. SHERIFF’S OFFICE (HCSO) NARRATIVE:
“At approximately 9:20…(a) HCSO deputy was flagged down at Free Chapel Gainesville Campus on McEver Road about someone driving erratically in a truck pulling a trailer in the church parking lot. The deputy found the truck and was speaking with the…driver, Billy D.J. Croy, 40, when Croy ran off on foot.
Additional deputies, including a K9 team responded, established a perimeter and tracked Croy to a creek bed behind the church where he was taken into custody, roughly ten minutes after he ran.
Deputies found two handguns, one on the ground in the path Croy took when he ran, and another inside the truck. They also found less than one ounce of marijuana and a pipe in the truck. Deputies charged Croy, who had outstanding warrants in Dawson and Forsyth Counties, with the following crimes.
- Possession of a firearm by a convicted felon – 2 counts (felony)
- Giving false information to an officer – (misdemeanor)
- Obstruction of an officer (misdemeanor)
- Possession of marijuana (misdemeanor)
- Possession of drug-related objects (misdemeanor)
Deputies transported Croy to the Hall County Jail where he is being held without bond.”
A spokeswoman for the sheriff’s office says Croy injured himself “purposefully” by hitting his head on his cell window in booking. He was checked by jail medical staff and placed on observation, she added, to prevent any further attempts to self-harm.
