Hall Co. expecting bigger crowds at its parks this summer

With a number of federal parks, boat ramps, etc. on Lake Lanier closed as of this week, Hall County is urging citizens to prioritize planning ahead and safety on the lake as it prepares for larger crowds at its lakeshore facilities.

“While we always anticipate more visitors to our parks on holidays, with fewer parks available, we encourage everyone to plan their trips carefully, consider alternative locations, and ensure they are well-prepared for a safe and enjoyable experience on Lake Lanier,” Director of Hall County Parks and Community Services Brent Holloway said.

Hall County public safety personnel, including both Hall County Fire Rescue and the Hall County Sheriff’s Office, will have an increased presence on and around the lake throughout the weekend.

“Rest assured, if the park is in Hall County, our men and women will do all they can to keep park visitors safe,” Sheriff Gerald Couch said. “For quite some time now, off-duty deputies have worked in an extra-duty capacity patrolling all lake parks in the county. The arrangement enables us to keep regular patrol staffing at full strength while still providing park patrols. I’m pleased to say the plan remains in place as we head into the holiday weekend.”

While there will be an increased number of first responders on the lake this weekend, Hall County Fire Rescue urges lake visitors to take precautionary steps for their own safety, including:

• Always wearing a life jacket when boating or swimming

• Keeping a close eye on children in or near the water

• Using designated swimming areas with life jacket loaner stations and following park guidelines

• Staying hydrated and protecting yourself from sun exposure

• Monitoring weather conditions and familiarizing yourself with park regulations

“Wearing a life jacket is probably the most important safety measure people can take on the lake,” Hall County Fire Rescue Chief Jerry Smith said. “If people do find themselves in an emergency situation, knowing where they are on the lake and being able to identify nearby landmarks helps our crews respond faster.”
