GHS loses one of its biggest supporters

Gainesville High School has lost one of its biggest boosters and a woman long associated with the school’s Cheerleading Program.

Helen Law Perry died Monday at the age of 64. Tributes have been pouring in from friends, family, former colleagues and former students.

“Thank you Coach Helen Perry for all you did and meant to the Gainesville Cheerleading Program!” the Gainesville City School System (GCSS) posted on Facebook. “You will be dearly missed but we know you will always be looking down over these Red Elephant Cheerleaders past, present, and future…she was a leader, mentor, friend, and a true Red Elephant.”

Perry started with Gainesville City Schools as a substitute teacher, then a paraprofessional. She went back to college at age 45 because she wanted to be a teacher fulltime. When she graduated from the University of Georgia, a job was open at Gainesville High School, and the rest, as they say, is history. She also served as the school’s Work-Based Learning Coordinator where she helped shape students’ future employment.
