Fugitive rape suspect behind bars

After being on the run for more than a year, a man accused in the sexual assault of a Gainesville woman in last year has been jailed in Hall County.

Anderson Francisco Murillo-Martinez, 22, was extradited from the Santa Rosa County Jail in Florida on Sunday. He is being held on felony charges of rape and aggravated assault under the Family Violence Act (FVA). In addition, the suspect, a native of Honduras, has been placed under an immigration hold.

According to Hall County Sheriff’s Office (HCSO) criminal investigators, Murillo-Martinez followed the adult victim into her residence in southeastern Hall County the night of Feb. 19, 2024.

“While inside the residence, the suspect forced the victim to have sex with him,” sheriff’s office spokeswoman B.J. Williams said. “He also strangled the victim during the course of the assault. When she attempted to leave, the suspect grabbed her car keys and cell phone and refused to allow her to exit. The victim was able to find her car keys the following morning and drive to a friend’s house where she called 911.”

The report says suspect and the victim knew one another prior to the crime.

Investigators obtained a warrant for Murillo-Martinez on the aggravated assault charge on Feb. 29, 2024. At that time, they had information he had fled the state. The warrant for the rape charge was issued Monday, after DNA evidence was obtained from the suspect.

Murillo-Martinez is being held without bond.
