Fewer SROs in Barrow County?

(GEORGIA NEWS NETWORK)

Barrow County school officials say that soon the system will not be able to afford all the School Resource Officers (SROs) currently employed. This means less SROs in a school system that suffered a mass shooting at a school last fall.

Beginning next month, the school system says it will only pay for half the salaries of 12 officers, versus the 16 currently employed. The county and school district usually split the cost. Apalachee High parent William Philp tells Atlanta News First his kids are among those who survived the shooting at Apalachee High and anything that further jeopardizes their safety is ludicrous.

Parent Alecia Behlog says she’s also unhappy since an SRO is credited with helping minimize casualties during the shooting at Apalachee last year.

School officials say they are committed to paying for the officers regardless of government funding since they are necessary.
