*An Athens man is facing felony charges after a search of his home appears to have revealed a possible fake check operation. Authorities say they found stolen checks, manufactured checks, stolen identification documents, stolen mail, and materials used in the manufacturing of fraudulent checks. The search was part of a two-year-long investigation into mail theft, check manufacturing, and forgery. WSB -TV reports that the man, 30-year-old Alex Brown is facing 16 felony charges, and authorities are seeking more warrants as the investigation continues. More charges could follow.
*A federal judge is considering a Georgia law that restricts social media use for minors and requires age verification for adult websites with one social media giant asking for it to be blocked. NetChoice, representing internet-based services, including Google and Meta, is challenging the law, arguing it violates First Amendment rights and burdens social media companies. The law, set to take effect on July 1, would require parental consent for minors under 16 to open social media accounts. WABE reports that critics raise concerns about privacy, cyber security threats, and potential restrictions on constitutionally protected speech. Similar laws in other states have also faced legal challenges.
