4:15 P.M. WEDNESDAY UPDATE:
The woman who was driving the SUV that turned into the path of East Hall High teacher and coach Victor Vega’s motorcycle early Tuesday remained in the Hall County Jail at mid-afternoon Wednesday following her arrest earlier in the day. Maria Escobedo, 57, of Gillsville, is being held on bonds totaling $16,700. Jail records show she was booked Wednesday, charged with homicide by vehicle in the 2nd degree.

The Hall County School District (HCSD) statement on the death of Coach Vega:
“We are deeply saddened today by the loss of teacher and coach Victor Vega of East Hall High School. Our prayers go out to the Vega family, the students and faculty at East Hall High School, and the East Hall Community. We currently have a crisis team in place at East Hall High School to support students and staff members who are struggling with this tragic loss.”
ORIGINAL STORY. POSTED 2:30 P.M. TUESDAY:
An assistant baseball and softball coach at East Hall High School coach was killed in an early morning crash involving his motorcycle and another vehicle. It happened in the Rabbittown area.
GEORGIA STATE PATROL NARRATIVE :
“On May 06, 2025, at 0745 AM, a trooper from the Gainesville Post responded to Old Cornelia Highway at Jesse Jewell Parkway to investigate a traffic crash. Upon arrival, the trooper determined a 2007 Chevrolet Suburban was traveling south on Old Cornelia Hwy. The driver, Maria Escobedo, 57, of Gillsville, was attempting to turn left onto Old Cornelia Highway. A 2003 Honda CMX 300 (Motorcycle) was traveling east on Jesse Jewell Parkway in the right lane. The motorcycle was driven by Victor Vega, 54, of Gainesville. Mrs. Escobedo failed to yield while turning left. Mr. Vega struck the front right bumper of the Suburban. Mr. Vega was ejected from his motorcycle and was run over by the suburban. Mr. Vega was transported to Northeast Georgia Medical Center, where he succumbed to his injuries.”
