Dawson Co. sheriff defuses jail hostage incident

Dawson County Sheriff Joe Johnson is getting credit for defusing a hostage situation in the front lobby at the county jail early Thursday.

It all began about 4:00 when a man later identified as David Christopher Morris of Dawsonville entered the building, holding a knife at the throat of a Lyft driver. Morris, who had been picked up in Gainesville, produced the knife and told the driver he wanted to go to the jail in Dawsonville.

When they got to the jail, he went inside and holding the driver hostage demanded to see Sheriff Johnson.

As a SWAT team took up positions around the jail, Johnson arrived and began talking to Morris who soon let his hostage, who suffered minor injuries, go and surrendered.

He was immediately arrested but a list of charges had not been released at last check. And we’ve not been told when Morris wanted to talk to the sheriff.
