Canadian smoke update; northern lights return

Air quality in the Gainesville area and most of north and central Georgia should remain good again Sunday, even as smoke from those Canadian wildfires continues to drift southward.

“Wildfire smoke from Canada remains suspended high in the atmosphere, so the sky will have a hazy/milky appearance again today,” a National Weather Service (NWS) advisory noted early Sunday. “No impacts to air quality are expected as the smoke will remain well above the ground.”

(Accompanying satellite picture from NWS shows northwest to southeast path of smoke across U.S. on Saturday.)

And if you missed them earlier this year, get set for a return of the northern lights to Georgia Sunday night. “A powerful G4 solar storm is expected to strike Earth Sunday night,” NOAA (National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration) says. “It will be so strong that the northern lights could be visible…all the way down to the Gulf Coast…”

The best viewing time, as long as clouds and/or the Canadian smoke don’t interfere, should be from about sunset which is 8:35 ’til around 2:00 Monday morning.
